Stomach fat is one thing that many of us struggle to get rid of it. But as we age, it gets trickier to lose the belly bulge. However, a well-balanced diet along with exercise can do wonders and help you lose that thick unwanted belly fat. Here are five simple ways to achieve that flat, sexy and toned tummy:

Do cardio:

Aerobic exercise is the best way to burn the belly fat. A Duke University study also confirms that aerobic exercise is the most effective in burning that deep, visceral belly fat. According to the study, aerobic training burns 67% more calories than resistance training or a combination of the two.

House cleaning:

You can lose your thick belly fat even while doing your household chores like vacuum cleaning. Vacuuming is a great stomach workout as it tightens your abdominal muscles while you do your cleaning.

Replace soda with plain water:

Swap soda and other carbonated drinks, which will only gang up in your belly with plain water. Drink lots of water (at least eight big glasses of water) a day to reduce bloating. Bloating can make your tummy appear fatter than it is.

Sleep for 7 hours or more:

If you want to lose your belly fat fast, try to get more sleep. Studies have shown that those who sleep 7 hours or more a night lose twice as much fat and are less hungry than those who sleep less than 7 hours a day.

Eat healthy:

Remember, you are what you eat. The foods that you eat can play an important part in your body, especially when you are on a diet. Try to reduce the amount of calories from sugars and fats. Take whole grain foods and skimmed milk. Fruits and vegetables are a must in your healthy diets.

1. Truly recognize your pleasure
You want to immediately approve of your present sensations. This starts before you even get in the sack by overcoming anxieties you have about sex. This may require identifying limitations you've been taught about sex, like how you're supposed to respond (or not respond). You need to then challenge any social conditioning that impedes upon your response.

Ridding yourself of the uninvited "others" in your bed will enable you to solely focus on the orgasmic sensations, including ones that come from simply anticipating action.

2. Give yourselves time for pleasuring
Lovers may stimulate each other by fantasizing out loud, taking your time getting to the genitals and hot spots. Teasing allows for greater energy awareness and arousal, and these are what make the experience ultimately so mind-blowing.
3. Get in the know
The more we know about our bodies, sex, and sexual response, the better we can recognize sensations, the more we can lose ourselves in them. Become knowledgeable about sexual response, sexual anatomy, and erotic techniques.

4. Touch for pleasure
You can show your partner that you are into the moment by informing them about what you are going to do so he or she can surrender more easily. Highlighting a lover's physical responses further enables them to tune into the sensations.

5. Learn to relax
Lovers have the tendency to tense up during sexual excitement, which is not conducive to extended orgasm. You need to be able to surrender your nervous system during genital stimulation. It's this letting go of tension that allows you to embrace your pleasure.

6. Become an effective communicator

To amplify things up, you may need to request changes that will intensify your pleasure if you're the receiver. As the giver, you may need to ask for feedback or direction. In either case, asking for more will help you to feel more. Giving approval can do wonders for a lover's ego.

7. Learn to channel your energy
You want to get out of your head, directing your energy to your groin. This will make for more explosive results, plus help you to further tune into your sexual response.

8. Have plenty of lubricant handy
As you will be loving for the long-haul, make sure you avoid the friction, pain, and discomfort that can result from working each other raw by using lube.

9. Develop your pelvic floor muscles
Exercising your pubbococcygeus (PC) muscle will put you more in tune with your sexual response. It's also what makes for more powerful orgasms.

10. Do away with any drive-thru mentality

Having an EMO isn't like going for fast food. One can't go into it thinking instant gratification. Instead, approach it as though training for a sport.

Why? It all depends on the choice and fantasies that makes you like a certain type of lovemaking. Well there are many men who only prefer wild sex over mild one. But, a majority of women love to have sex in the mild way that is filled with romance and gentleness. What actually is wild and mild sex? Find out the difference between the two.

Wild sex:

In this type of sex, the passion and individual pleasure takes the toll. You control the session according to your way. In short, you are not under the normal modes of behaviour as you are carried away by the drive. It is the passionate sex that is erotic and has lot of pleasurable pain. Screaming, moaning, too much of pressure, scratching and biting are few ways to characterize this type of sex. The thrill of sex in this form makes it totally a hot session. Being dirty, free and comfortable is what makes a sex wild. When you are not under the boundations of throwing an impression but only concerned about satisfying each other, then you end up having a wild sex. Many couples admit that they make wild love when they meet each other after a long time. If there is a gap in the sex life, then the passion is at its peak. The curiosity and the urge to have sex makes it an erotic session. Wild sex is adventurous as you are always in the urge to have sex in a variety of ways. Make sure that your partner is ready to have wild sex. It is because, many women feel wild sex is cheap, desperate or looks like your partner is raping you. So, make sure your woman is comfortable with it.

Mild sex:

In this type of sex, you are slow. You enjoy all the actions with each other. Be it a gentle kiss or fast paced sex, it is all done keeping in mind that the partner doesn't hurt each other while enjoying pleasure. When compared to wild sex, mild lovemaking has a gentle approach. Most of the women love this form of sex because it makes them enjoy the intimate moments to the fullest. Also pain reduces when you engage in a mild sex. Women feel that having a mild sex shows how caring your partner is. But, many couples believe that mild sex only happens when either of the one is uncomfortable or doesn't like too much of desperateness. Women love romance over sex so mild sex is more preferred by them.

Which type of sex do you like to have? Wild and erotic sex or mild and lovely intimate lovemaking session?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-283303044884862517.post-59006044468380281032012-07-24T00:21:00.002-07:002012-07-24T00:23:19.933-07:00Why men fall asleep after sex
It’s a problem that leaves many women frustrated, but scientists have given men an excuse for sleeping immediately after sex. Men cannot help but fall asleep straight after indulging in sexual activity because their brains are ordering them to do so, a new study has revealed. In
the research, scientists have claimed the male brain is programmed to switch off after Orgasm.

In contrast, women stay alert so are more likely to be left staring at the ceiling in frustration.

Men were scanned during and after climax and it was found that the entire cerebral cortex, the brain’s “thinking” part, shut down during orgasm.

Then two other areas, the cingulate cortex and amygdala, triggered the deactivation of all sexual desire.

“These experiments give us the first hints as to what happens in the brain during orgasm,” the Mirror quoted Serge Stoleru, a French government scientist, as saying.

“For women it seems to be different,” he said.

Stoleru said that women do not have such a strong refractory period – which is a recovery phase when the body calms down.

That leaves them wondering why their partners have lost all interest when they want more of it.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-283303044884862517.post-75674949068431943532012-07-17T17:33:00.001-07:002012-07-17T17:34:46.570-07:00Sleep 7 hours a night to prevent brain from ageing
Sleeping for seven hours a night can prevent your brain from ageing by an extra two years, according to a new research.

American researchers found that older women who slept for seven hours a night had far better concentration and memories than those who slept for nine hours. Those who got less than five hours were also found to suffer, the `Daily Mail` reported.

Scientists believe that those who restrict themselves to seven hours a night can prevent their brain from ageing by an extra two years, compared with those who get too much sleep or not enough.

Earlier research has shown that having more than seven hours of sleep a night can lead to weight gain and increase the risk of heart problems and diabetes. However, the new study is one of the first to link it to concentration problems.

The research, presented at the Alzheimer`s Association International Conference in Vancouver, Canada, looked at 15,000 women in their seventies over five years.

All the participants underwent regular tests to check their memory, concentration and attention span. Those who usually slept for seven hours performed far better than those who got less than five hours, or more than nine.

"Our findings support the notion that extreme sleep durations and changes in sleep duration over time may contribute to cognitive decline and early Alzheimer`s changes in older adults," lead researcher Elizabeth Devore of Brigham and Women`s Hospital, Boston, was quoted as saying by the paper.

"The public health implications of these findings could be substantial, as they might lead to the eventual identification of sleep-based strategies for reducing risk of cognitive impairment and Alzheimer`s," she added.

"A good night`s sleep is one of life`s pleasures but, once again, this robust research suggests that the quality and duration of sleep are also linked to our cognitive health," a spokesman for the Alzheimer`s Society said.

"We`re not saying you shouldn`t enjoy the occasional lie-in, but good-quality sleep, eating a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight and exercising regularly can all make a difference in reducing your risk," he said.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-283303044884862517.post-62977248888668579622012-07-16T17:26:00.001-07:002012-07-16T17:27:40.660-07:00Pistachios can protect your heart during acute stress
Scientists say eating a handful of pistachio nuts a day can help reduce the damage done to the body by acute stress.

Experts at Pennsylvania State University have claim that the nuts help lower blood pressure and heart rate in difficult situations.

In a study participants were given a variety of healthy diets, some containing pistachios, some without.

The scientists then measured their subjects’ cardiovascular responses, first as they took a challenging mental arithmetic test and again as they immersed their feet in cold water.

The largest drop in blood pressure was associated with eating about 1.5oz of nuts a day.

“Daily events, such as a tight deadline or public speaking can increase blood pressure,” a newspaper quoted Dr Sheila West, lead author of the study published online in the journal Hypertension, as saying.

“These results are significant because they show that physiological responses to stress are affected by the foods we eat,” she noted.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-283303044884862517.post-39223270529314090942012-07-14T17:33:00.001-07:002012-07-14T17:34:36.616-07:00What To Do With A Naked Man?

Seeing your partner naked can excite you every time. Women hesitate to roam naked or semi naked around their men. But, men do not find it embarrassing to come out in a towel after a shower. Seeing your man half naked can definitely tempt you. Looking at the wet skin is sexually appealing to the eyes of a woman. If your man has come out naked in front of you (intentionally or unintentionally), utilise the moment to the fullest. Here is what you should do when you see a naked man in front of you!
Things to do with a naked man:

Feel his back: The back of a man excites a woman within minutes. If the chest is clean and well built, it adds fuel to the fire! Feel his back with your soft hands. Use your long grown fingers to scratch his back and signal that you are getting into the mood to have sex. You can also give him a sexual back massage.
Tickle him: Have some fun with your naked man by tickling him. Search his erogenous zones and attack. His neck, chest, back and upper thigh regions are his sensuous zones. Tickle him there to excite him and make him ready to have sex with you.

Strip: When your man is standing or lying naked in front of you, you also need to accompany your man. Stop feeling shy. Even he is naked. Strip your clothes slowly. Make him come close to you while you get naked and accompany him.

Pick up a place: After you strip, go and sit on a new place (like a couch or a kitchen slab) where you want him to follow you. Keep turning behind to signal him that you are calling him towards you. When you reach the place, sit in a sensual way and tempt him to have sex right there. Stimulate yourself while he is staring at you. This self stimulation would work wonders.

Reach his G spot: Yes! Even men have a special G spot. The place between testicles and anus is the G spot of a man. Just tickle there or rub your hands in the G spot of your naked man. By doing this thing, you would definitely end up having sex!

These are few sexual things that you should do when you see a naked man. Do not break the mood of your naked man the next time you see him showing off his assets!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-283303044884862517.post-73915053188718410212012-07-10T16:57:00.001-07:002012-07-10T16:58:43.785-07:00Quick fix for breast cancer set to revolutionize treatment
Breast cancer patients could be escape major surgery thanks to a new 10-minute operation.

While the patient is under local anaesthetic a pencil-sized probe is inserted into the tumour and blasts it with liquid nitrogen. Researchers say some of these are involved in regulating the female sex hormone- estrogen, which can trigger the growth of both breasts and tumours, reports the Daily Mail. While

research has previously linked breast density, which is the amount of non-fat tissue, to an increased risk of cancer, there has been little evidence of a link with breast size.

Participants in this study carried out by a US company, were asked to give their bra size on a 10-point scale from smaller than AAA to larger than DDD. The genetic code of the women, who were all of European origin, was read by scientists who looked through millions of tiny mutations in their DNA, called single-nucleotide polymorphisms. Out of the seven that were strongly linked to breast size, three were also associated with breast cancer.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Dr Nicholas Eriksson of the California-based genetics firm 23andMe shared that it was the first substantial link between breast size and cancer, but added that much more research is needed before it could be strongly concluded.

He tells the daily that one out of the three mutations regulates the activity of the oestrogen receptor gene that plays a vital role in breast growth and in majority of breast cancer cases. Another is located in a region of a woman’s genome that often shows abnormalities in those with certain types of breast cancer.

The link was seen regardless of the women’s age, pregnancy and breastfeeding history and genetic ancestry, according to the study published in the journal BMC Medical Genetics.

However, the study’s lead author, Karin Michels, told The Daily Mail that these results did not mean those with small breasts could assume they were safe and urged all women to go for regular breast cancer screening.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-283303044884862517.post-66159324103330151842012-07-04T17:39:00.001-07:002012-07-04T17:40:43.092-07:00How to keep your skin glowing this monsoon
After a hot and sweaty summer, the monsoon comes as a relief but the humid and damp weather takes a toll on the skin and eyes. Experts advise how small changes in the skin care routine during the season can keep the skin glowing and eyes fresh. Monsoon brings humidity and it's bad news
for all type of skins:

Oily Skin: The skin type is mainly the result of genetically determined hormonal changes. To treat oily skin one needs to remove excess oil by cleansing it twice or thrice a day, but not more than that.

Skin"Limit washing your face to two or three times a day as too much washing will stimulate your skin to produce more oil. Avoid heavy cleansing creams. Scrub your face on a regular basis. This will help unclog the pores and remove the layer of dead cells from your skin," cosmetic surgeon Anup Dhir told IANS.

It is advised to use warm water while washing face as it dissolves skin oil better than lukewarm or cold water.

Other than that, one also uses mud-pack. Homemade pack made with "Chane ka atta and raw milk" can help in keeping skin refreshing and glowing.

Dry Skin: Dryness is a sign of dehydration and lack of skin repairing vitamins. During monsoon the problem worsens. One requires cream based cleanser, says Dr. Geetika Mittal, medical director of the International Skin and Anti-Aging Centre (ISAAC).

"A moisturizer increases the water content of the outer layers of the skin and gives it a soft, moist look and it is always advised one with dry skin opt for alcohol free toner," said Mittal.

Also, apply glycerin and rose water mixture to keep skin soft.

Combination Skin: This type of skin is characterised with the T-portion as oily and the cheeks are usually normal or dry in condition. Since it combines both the oily and dry skin it should be treated as if it were two different types of skin, said Dhir.

"The dry area requires gentle cleansing and regular moisturizing. The oily part needs to be deeply cleansed and toned with regular scrubbing," Dhir told IANS.

Moonsoon also brings skin infections
Fungal and bacterial infections are common during rainy season. Moist and damp skin leads to these infections. Also, one can get rashes and ringworm and even skin gets discoloured.

Dhir advises keeping the body dry is the basic tip to tackle the infections.

"Switch to cotton clothes as they allow your body to breathe. Allow damp hair to dry before you tie them again. To circumvent allergies from mosquito bites, wear full-sleeved clothes and use a mosquito repellent cream and head for air-conditioned rooms. Bathe twice a day to keep the problems at bay," he added.

Eye Infection

With rains come puddles of dirty water and eye infections soar. But, with a bit of prevention, you could stay safe, says Mahipal Sachdev, chairman and medical director, centre for Sight group of Eye Hospitals.

"Close your eyes when you decide to get soaked in the rain as it screens off atmospheric pollutants. While the rain water is reasonably clean, but you need to be wary of the rain water if you stand under a tree or a building, as it can be contaminated with pollutants, which could increase eye infections," said Sachdev.

Emphasizing on hygienic practices, Sachdev advises how conjunctivitis and stye could be avoided.

"These infections are contagious and can be easily transmitted via towels, handkerchiefs, lenses, glasses and other articles handled during the course of daily activities. To avoid infection, you need to ensure that you do not share articles of personal use with anyone else," he said.

Eye infections result in redness of eyes and watery discharge. One should use an antibiotic eye drop to treat eye infections, but only after it has been prescribed by an ophthalmologist. Use of contact lenses should be avoided during any kind of infection in the eye.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-283303044884862517.post-59960179646621423262012-06-28T17:48:00.001-07:002012-06-28T17:49:21.627-07:00Hitting the gym boosts your libido
Middle aged men who exercise get a boost to their sex drive, a higher sperm count and stronger erections, a study has found.

Losing weight reduces the chances of low testosterone levels by up to 50 percent in more mature males.

The results come from a study by Dublin doctors of 900 men with an average age of 54 taking part in a US diabetes prevention programme, a newspaper reported.

Weight loss can delay or avoid the onset of diabetes among those men who are most susceptible to the disease.

But scientists said the boost to their sex lives could be the added incentive men need to exercise and diet.

The study found levels of testosterone went up in direct proportion to the number of pounds lost and the decrease in waist size.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-283303044884862517.post-27689734830291418512012-06-27T18:30:00.001-07:002012-06-27T18:31:22.818-07:00Coca-Cola and Pepsi contain alcohol`
Coca-Cola and Pepsi contain minute traces of alcohol, a study has revealed.

According to tests carried out by the Paris-based National Institute of Consumption, more than half of leading colas contain traces of alcohol, Daily Mail reported Wednesday.

These include the brand leaders Coca-Cola and Pepsi Cola, while it is mainly only cheap supermarket versions of the drink which are alcohol-free.
"60 Million Consumers", the French magazine, published the results of the tests in its latest issue.

The tests suggest that the alcohol levels are as low as 10 mg in every litre, and this works out at around 0.001 per cent alcohol.

But the figures will still be enough to upset the thousands of Muslims who regularly drink Cola because their religion forbids them from drinking alcohol, the daily said.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-283303044884862517.post-20143341029235064032012-06-26T17:43:00.001-07:002012-06-26T17:44:38.493-07:00Lack of sleep makes you fat?
Researchers have blamed lack of shuteye for exploding obesity epidemic in Britain. But it can be good for your immune system, says a study.

Short-term stress, the fight-or-flight response, a mobilisation of bodily resources lasting minutes or hours in response to immediate threats -- stimulates immune activity, said Firdaus Dhabhar, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioural sciences and member of the Stanford University Institute for Immunity, Transplantation, and Infection.

And that`s a good thing. The immune system is crucial for wound healing and preventing or fighting infection, and both wounds and infections are common risks during chases, escapes and combat, the Journal of Psychoneuroendocrinology reported.

Working with colleagues at Stanford and two other universities, Dhabhar showed that subjecting lab rats to mild stress caused a massive mobilization of several key types of immune cells into the bloodstream and then onto the skin and other tissues, according to a university statement.

This large-scale migration of immune cells, which took place over two hours, was comparable to the mustering of troops in a crisis, Dhabhar said. He and colleagues had previously shown that a similar immune-cell redistribution in patients experiencing the short-term stress of surgery predicts enhanced postoperative recovery.

Investigators were able to show that the massive redistribution of immune cells throughout the body was orchestrated by three hormones released by the adrenal glands, in different amounts and at different times, in response to the stress-inducing event. These hormones are the brain`s call-to-arms to the rest of the body, Dhabhar said.

"Mother Nature gave us the fight-or-flight stress response to help us, not to kill us," said Dhabhar, who has been conducting experiments for well over a decade on the effects of the major stress hormones on the immune system.

The findings paint a clearer picture of exactly how the mind influences immune activity. "An impala`s immune system has no way of knowing that a lion is lurking in the grass and is about to pounce, but its brain does," Dhabhar added.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-283303044884862517.post-84927962623528815612012-06-21T06:23:00.002-07:002012-06-21T06:24:08.480-07:0010 healthy habits to make you handsome
There are easier, more effective, ways to look like a million bucks and look like a Bollywood hunk. Make it a habit, like shaving or brushing your teeth.

2. Butt out.
As in, stop smoking. Cigarettes cause worse wrinkling than the sun. Smoking robs the skin of collagen and elastin which give the skin texture, strength and elasticity and in turn speeds up the aging process. Cigarette use can also give the skin a grayish tone.

3. Eat right.
A healthy diet equals a more glowing complexion, shinier hair and a fitter you.

“The key is to stay well balanced,” says Jim White, a fitness and nutrition expert, and a spokesman for the American Dietetic Association. “Oatmeal is a great power food. It’s loaded with fiber and can help manage hunger and lower cholesterol. Cottage cheese, meanwhile, is low in sugar and high in protein and calcium.”

Overall, stick closely to diet with few high-fat meats and larger amounts of grains, fish and olive oil.

4. Sleep.
Get the recommended eight hours a night, at least. Sleeping restores all organs of the body, including the skin, which is the body’s largest organ. It also reduces tension and anxiety, lessening crow’s feet, frown lines and worry lines. Lack of sleep also causes those dreaded circles under your eyes.

5. Hydrate.
Skin needs water to function properly especially to fight damage caused by the sun. Drinking the recommended eight glasses a day additionally flushes toxins from the body and brings nutrients to the deep layer of the skin (the dermis).

6. Slim down.
Trimming down will not only improve your appearance but also reduce your risk of stroke, diabetes, cancer and other diseases.

But don’t go on some radical diet. Instead think about portion control. Shave your calorie intake by 500 calories a day by cutting back on some vices like fried foods, and you’ll lose a sensible pound or two a week.

7. Be pro-antioxidant.
Antioxidants like vitamins A, C and E found in fruits and vegetables are essential. They promote skin repair and elasticity and also reduce your risk for heart disease and cancer.

8. Do cardio.
A cardio workout regimen lowers stress, makes you happier and gives your skin a glow. Do any kind of aerobic exercise that will raise your heart rate above baseline for half an hour a day. It could be going for a walk, taking a bike ride or using the elliptical — something that works up a sweat a little. Don’t do too much too fast or you’ll get injured and quit. Exercise should be fun, and you should feel good doing it.

9. Watch the booze.
Alcohol causes swelling of the tissues, especially puffy eyes, and often leads to bad eating habits — causing weight gain — and smoking,

10. Stand tall.
Good posture really is a good thing. Core strength training will get rid of that unseemly slouch. Do light resistance training two to three times a week to strengthen core muscles. A certified personal trainer can work with you on a regimen that you can follow at home.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-283303044884862517.post-14376494765448881442012-06-21T06:22:00.002-07:002012-06-21T06:23:13.209-07:00Sleep well for a better sex life!
Cutting back on sleep can be quite disastrous for healthy young men – it sends their testosterone levels plummeting, says a study.
Men who slept less than five hours a night for one week in a lab had significantly lower levels of testosterone than when they had a full night’s sleep, according to the study.

Significantly, skipping sleep was found to reduce a young man’s testosterone levels by the same amount as aging 10 to 15 years, or 10 percent to 15 percent.

Low testosterone has a host of negative consequences for young men, and not just in sexual behaviour and reproduction. It is critical in building strength, muscle mass and bone density.

“Low testosterone levels are associated with reduced well being and vigour, which may also occur as a consequence of sleep loss,” said Eve Van Cauter, professor in medicine, University of Chicago Medical Centre, the US, who led the study, according to a Chicago statement.

At least 15 percent of the adult working population in the US gets less than five hours of sleep a night, and suffers many adverse health effects because of it. Low testosterone is also linked with low energy, reduced libido, poor concentration and fatigue.

The group of young men recruited for the study passed a rigorous battery of tests to screen for endocrine or psychiatric disorders and sleep problems. They were an average of 24 years old, lean and in good health.

They spent three nights in the lab sleeping for up to 10 hours, and then eight nights sleeping less than five hours. Their blood was sampled every 15 to 30 minutes for 24 hours during the last day of the 10-hour sleep phase and the last day of the five-hour sleep phase.

The effects of sleep loss on testosterone levels were apparent after just one week of short sleep. Five hours of sleep decreased their testosterone levels by 10 percent to 15 percent.

The young men had the lowest testosterone levels in the afternoons on their sleep restricted days.

They reported a decline in their sense of well-being as their blood testosterone levels declined. Their mood and vigour fell more every day as the sleep restriction part of the study progressed.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-283303044884862517.post-53322978978850467632012-06-21T06:19:00.001-07:002012-06-21T06:22:23.722-07:00How radiation from mobile phones and towers harm you
We’ve all heard that mobile phones are harmful for our health. Chain emails, Facebook and Twitter updates constantly warn us about it. To the bottom of it all, we caught up with Neha Kumar an expert on the topic of mobile radiation and director, NESA, a firm which designs radiation measurement and shielding equipment. She has been studying about radiation from cell phones/towers for about three years and has interacted with experts, researchers, doctors and patients around the world who have been affected by prolonged exposure to cell phone/tower radiation. Excerpts from the interview:

How exactly does mobile radiation cause health problems?

Mobile phones and towers emit electromagnetic radiation having health effects which can be divided into thermal and non-thermal. Thermal effects refer to heating effect which you observe if you hold the phone for long near your ear.

Non-thermal effects on the cells, genes and the DNA and are more harmful than thermal effects.

Excessive use of mobiles can lead to headache, sleep disturbance, lack of concentration, memory loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and increased risk of brain cancer.

Having mobile towers in your neighbourhood can also pose health problems like severe headache, sleep disturbance, constant body pain, memory problems, joint pains etc. The more severe health effects noted include infertility, miscarriage, neurodegenerative disorders (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, etc.), heart problems and cancer.

Are these mobile radiations more harmful for any particular demographic?

Children are more vulnerable due to a developing immune system and thinner skulls which allows radiation to penetrate deeper. Women run the risk of health problems like hormonal imbalances, miscarriages, breast and ovarian cancer as they tend to spend more time at home and are exposed continuously.

Is there any solid evidence to back the findings that these radiations are harmful to people?

There are several national and international studies where scientists have found a strong correlation between health problems and exposure to microwaves from mobile phones and mobile towers. Prof Girish Kumar from IIT Bombay had sent a report to Department of Telecommunications (DOT), India which has more than 200 references from peer reviewed publications in the end.

What precautions can you take to reduce your exposure to the radiation from mobile phones?

Some precautions that you can take:

Limit your use, talk for short durations and switch sides during long conversations. SMS/IM chat whenever possible.
Use the land-line, whenever possible
Use speakerphone or wired hands free, but keep the phone at least 1 feet away.
When not in use, keep the mobile phone away from your body as they still continue to emit some radiation while trying to communicate with the base station by sending at least one pulse per minute. Do not keep it in your pocket, under your pillow etc.
Use cell phones with lower Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) values. One can find the SAR value of a phone by simply searching- <company name=""> <model> SAR. The lower the SAR value, the less dangerous it is. Ideally go for a phone which has SAR value – 0.2 – 0.8 W/Kg

If towers are responsible is the Govt. doing anything about it? Are there any regulations that mobile companies have to follow?

Till 2009, the Indian government had not adopted any standards for safe exposure from mobile phone and mobile towers. In 2009, India adopted radiation norms specified by ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection) guidelines of 1998. However, ICNIRP guideline is outdated as it is only intended to protect the public against short term gross heating effects and NOT against ‘biological’ effects such as cancer and genetic damage from long term exposure. Also these safety standards are based on 6 minutes per day exposure, without accounting for people who live close to cell towers 24/7.

In Jan 2011, the report by Inter-Ministerial Committee mentioned several health hazards at levels thousand to ten thousand times below the ICNIRP standards and made recommendations to reduce the exposure to 1/10th of what ICNIRP had earlier recommended. However, even that has not been implemented yet.

If someone lives near mobile towers, what can they do about it? How can they detect whether they are being harmed or not? Who can they complain to?

If someone lives close to a mobile tower:

One can request the operators to reduce the power transmission
Change the angle of the antenna so that no house falls in the main beam of the antenna, or
Go for Shielding Solution

For detection, NESA has come up with a low cost, simple and easy to use Cell Tower Radiation Detector, DETEX 189 which is based on the health recommendation by Bioinitiative Group. It has an LED indicator as well as buzzer to find if one is living in a safe, caution or danger zone. Unfortunately, right now in India there is no e-mail id or authority where one can directly complain. However, one can try writing to TUG/DOT/TRAI.

Is there any active research/initiative taking place to counter these harmful effects? What alternatives do people have?

All over the world, people are going for fibre optic solution, low power transmitting antennas and in-building solutions and repeaters.Alternatively, areas where the radiation levels are high, people can go for radiation shielding solutions like – Window Shielding Film, Shielding Curtains, Radiation Shield units etc.
</model></company>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-283303044884862517.post-58895986717619751932012-06-21T06:13:00.001-07:002012-06-21T06:19:07.851-07:00Moderate drinking during pregnancy won’t harm your baby
Pregnant women can have a glass or two of alcoholic beverages daily without harming their child, says a new Danish study. Popular belief has it that excessive alcohol use during pregnancy causes a range of health problems from behavioural disorders and impaired IQ to facial disfigurement in unborn babies. Guidelines recommend that women who prefer to drink should consume no more than a medium-sized glass (175 ml) of wine, two units, twice a week.
But Danish researchers have now found that drinking up to three times that amount appears to have no negative effect on children. They decided to examine the issue because few studies have evaluated health effects on children of light or moderate drinking during pregnancy, the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology reports.

Danish researchers followed 1,628 women and their offspring from pregnancy to the time the children were five years. The mothers’ were asked to assess their own drinking during pregnancy in interviews conducted at antenatal appointment, usually at about 17 weeks, according to the Telegraph. They were then categorised as abstainers during pregnancy; light drinkers (one to four drinks a week); moderate drinkers (five to eight); or heavy drinkers (nine or more).

One drink contained 1.5 British units of alcohol roughly that in a small (125 ml) glass of medium-strength white wine. They found that having up to eight small drinks a week had no effect on the five-year-olds’ IQ, attention span, self-control and ability to organise themselves. Only children of women who consumed nine or more such drinks a week were affected, demonstrating lower attention spans.

Ulrik Schioler Kesmodel, professor at the Aarhus University, Denmark, said: “We are not encouraging women to drink but we hope to reassure those who have been drinking in the early stages of pregnancy – maybe before they knew they were having a baby – that they don’t need to worry about it.” He added that he and fellow researchers were “really surprised” not to find any evidence of harmful effects in children among pregnant women who had been involved in binge drinking.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-283303044884862517.post-35946146581653722532012-06-20T17:50:00.001-07:002012-06-20T17:52:34.008-07:00Night shift elevates breast cancer risk
Women who did night shifts had a higher risk of developing breast cancer, as compared to sisters who worked in daytime, according to a study.

"Our work has corroborated the results of previous studies and poses the problem of taking night work into consideration in public health management, especially since the number of women working a typical hours is on the increase," states Pascal Guenel, of Inserm (Institut National de la Sante et de la Recherche Medicale), who led the study.

Breast cancer is the number one cause of female mortality. It affects 100 out of 100,000 women per year in developed countries. Every year, more than 1.3 million new cases are diagnosed, 53,000 of these in France, said a university statement.

Inserm researchers examined the effect of night work on the health of 3,000 women in France between 2005 and 2008, including each period of night work. Over 11 percent of women had worked nights at some time during their career.
This increased risk was particularly marked in women who had worked nights for over four years, or in women whose working rhythm was less than three nights per week, because this led to more frequent disturbances between night and day rhythms.

Finally, the link between night work and breast cancer seemed to be more marked when we looked at women who had worked at night prior to a first pregnancy.

An explanation for this result could be that the mammary cells, incompletely differentiated in women before their first pregnancy, are more vulnerable.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-283303044884862517.post-33330454334157521262012-06-18T17:43:00.001-07:002012-06-18T17:44:34.210-07:00Having memory problems? In both cases, “chewing has an overall adverse affect on serial recall,” researchers wrote.

The jury is still out, however, on the role of flavour. In a 2002 study, the volunteers chewed mint-flavoured gum and performed better on short-term word and memory tasks than those who did not chew gum.

But because chewing gum loses its flavour in several minutes, “it seems advisable that chewing gum is only considered a performance enhancer as long as its flavour lasts,” the researchers noted.

The study was recently published in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-283303044884862517.post-20106294571099831632012-06-17T17:42:00.001-07:002012-06-17T17:43:43.719-07:00Health advice to dads on Father’s Day!
Doctors say men, on average, die younger than women, and have higher mortality rates from heart disease, cancer, stroke and AIDS.

Also men are much less likely than women to see their doctors.

“Many men are simply afraid of what their doctor might find,” said Dr. Aaron Michelfelder, a family doctor at Loyola University Health System.

“But ignoring a problem doesn’t make it go away. Indeed, the earlier we diagnose such conditions as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and cancer, the more successfully we can treat them,” he noted.

Michelfelder urges his patients to see him at least once a year. While there has been debate over the benefits of an annual physical exam, a yearly visit at a minimum provides an opportunity to conduct appropriate screening tests.

There also has been debate over various screening tests. Recommendations vary on such exams as PSA screening for prostate cancer.

Michelfelder offers the following advice, based on guidelines from the US Preventive Services Task Force and other health organizations.

First he asked to check Body Mass Index (BMI). It is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. A BMI under 18.5 is underweight. Normal is 18.5 to 24.9. Overweight is 25 to 29.9 and obese is 30 and above. BMI should be checked yearly. (You can calculate your own BMI by searching online for “BMI calculator” and plugging in your height and weight.)

According to him, men should be screened for colorectal cancer beginning at age 50. The gold standard is a colonoscopy. A doctor uses a slender, lighted tube to examine the entire colon.

A colonoscopy can find and remove precancerous growths called polyps. If a colonoscopy is normal, it`s good for 10 years. Other screening exams include a yearly fecal occult blood test (which can find blood in the stool) or, every five years, a fecal blood test combined with an exam called a sigmoidoscopy, which examines the lower part of the colon.

He suggests men ages 45 to 79 can take one baby aspirin a day to help prevent heart attacks.

People are advised to see a dentist at least once a year -- ideally every six months. Bad teeth can affect other parts of the body. For example, dental disease is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Men with risk factors such as a family history of diabetes, being overweight or experiencing diabetic symptoms should be screened with a fasting blood test. This test measures the amount of a sugar called glucose in your blood. Normal is less than 100 milligrams per deciliter; 101 to 125 is pre diabetes and above 125 suggests diabetes.

If a patient or his spouse reports a hearing problem, or if the patient works in a job with excessive noise, Michelfelder will order a hearing test.

He said every man 18 or older should have his blood pressure checked at least once a year.

Men ages 20 to 35 who have cardiovascular disease risk factors such as diabetes should be screened. After age 35, all men should be screened once every five years if normal, or more often if levels are borderline.

Your doctor will assess your risk of developing prostate cancer, and having sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV and syphilis. At a major sleep conference in Boston this week, experts have been presenting a slew of studies blaming poor sleeping habits for everything from stroke to unhealthy
eating and depression.

Here are some tips on how to get a better night's sleep, from expert sites like WebMD.com and the Mayo Clinic.

1. Stick to a sleep schedule
Be consistent with the times you go to bed and wake up to create a regular sleep pattern.

2. Follow a healthy diet
Aside from the obvious, including avoiding caffeine late at night, experts also say to refrain from going to bed hungry, overstuffed or after drinking too many liquids. If you're peckish, reach for a banana, which is rich in potassium and has been shown to help facilitate a deeper sleep.

3. Try sleep accessories and eliminate distractions
While an eye mask, ear plugs, or a sound generator for white noise have been shown to help, laptops in bed and smartphones on the night table have not. Unplug the room and create a restful sleep environment.

4. Create a bedtime ritual
Wind down with a hot bath, a book or soothing music and stick to the same bedtime routine.

5. Exercise
Regular physical exercise has been shown to enable a restful sleep.

6. Try meditation or relaxation techniques
Consider deep breathing exercises, yoga or tai chi to help you charge down.

7. Clear your mind
If you can't sleep because your mind is too cluttered, air out your concerns by either writing them on paper or talking them out with a spouse, friend or therapist.

8. Seek medical help
Though you may think chronic sleep deprivation is just stress-related, it could also be caused by an underlying medical problem like sleep apnea.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
